Provide a general explanation about old age and survivor pensions (min 300 max 400 words)
Foreign citizens over 66 years of age, who have worked and paid for Portuguese Social Security for more than 15 years, are entitled to an old-age pension.
To request the Old-Age Pension you can go to:
- To the Social Security Direct website.
- In Social Security services, including the National Pension Center.
- If you live abroad, the pension application is submitted to the Social Security institution in the country of residence, if there is an international Social Security agreement with Portugal, or to the National Pension Center, if not: Send by mail (If you send the form by this means, you must also send an addressed and sealed envelope to Social Security to return the receipt proving the delivery of the order)
If you are a non-resident, it is possible that your income will be taxed twice, since you are living as a pensioner in one country and receiving a pension from another country.
In these situations, you will always be subject to the tax regime of your country of residence, but you may also have to pay taxes in the other country.

- Valid beneficiary’s identification document (citizen card, identity card, civil registration certificate, birth certificate, passport).
- Taxpayer card.
- Valid identification document (citizen card, identity card, civil registration certificate, birth certificate, passport) of the person who signed the application (if the beneficiary does not know or cannot sign).
- Declaration of professional activity performed – RP5023-DGSS (only for professions with a special age anticipating regime of the old-age pension)
- Photocopy of documents proving compulsory military service time (military passbook or certificate issued by the relevant Recruitment and Mobilization District) in case that time has not yet been counted.
- Document proving the Bank Identification Number (NIB / IBAN) containing the name of the applicant as an account holder.
Duration:
The payment of the old-age pension is for life, ending with the death of the pensioner, unless another impediment occurs.

If you live in Portugal, you can place an order in the attendance services of the District Social Security Center in the area where you live, in the National Pension Center or on the Internet, at www.seg-social.pt, in the Direct Social Security service (only for old-age pensions);
and living abroad, in one of the countries belonging to the European Union, in the EEA (European Economic Area) countries that are not part of the EU, Switzerland and Turkey, in the countries with International Social Security Agreements with Portugal, you can submit the application on the Internet , at www.seg-social.pt, in the Direct Social Security service (only for old age pensions or in the international institutions provided for this purpose)
