The research career in Portugal is linked to the application for research grants. These grants are used to conclude the contract between the scholarship holder(researcher) and the entity that welcomes him, who in turn finances the research. These grants can take on a public or private character, depending on the type of entity that hosts them. National or foreign citizens (from European Union Member States of the European Union) can apply for research grants awarded in the scope of R&D projects and institutions (public or private research institutions, dedicated to scientific research and technological development) or from third countries, resident or not in Portugal.
