The public pension system offers an old-age pension and a survivor’s pension to all persons who have accumulated a contribution period of at least 15 years. In the case of EU / EEA citizens or the Swiss Confederation who have carried out professional activity on the Romanian territory and have had the quality of insured person in the public pension system, the provisions of Regulation (EC) of the European Parliament and of the Council no. 883 of 2004 are applicable. They will be able to benefit from the pension rights accumulated in Romania, regardless of the period in which they had the quality of insured, on the date when they will retire, regardless of the Member State in which the pension right is opened.

Unemployment insurance only covers people who have been insured under the unemployment insurance system for the last 12 months before losing their job. Unemployment benefits and the period of granting are calculated according to the value of SRI – Social Reference Indicator, respectively the period in which the person had the quality of insured before losing his job.

EU and EEA citizens who are on the territory of Romania and have a recognized resident status benefit from the same social insurance rights as Romanian citizens under the law.
In Romania, social protection is provided by public institutions in close cooperation with private institutions. Public social protection institutions coordinate different systems, both at the central and local level of the administration.
At the central administrative level, ministries, national agencies or national houses ensure the protection of persons with regard to their rights to sickness / health, maternity, disability, old age, survivors, accidents at work and occupational diseases, family / children and unemployment.
At the local administrative level, the town halls and the county general directorates for social assistance and child protection cover the needs of the persons in accordance with the principles of social solidarity and social inclusion.
The most important private social protection institutions are pension companies. These are new institutions that have become operational quite recently and are responsible for providing disability, old-age and survivors’ pensions. Private social service providers, on the other hand, largely cover people’s long-term care needs.
The allowance for family support is granted based on Law no. 277 of 2010.
The maximum income limits up to which the allowance is granted is 530 lei / family member.
Families with dependent school-age children benefit from the allowance provided that the children attend without interruption the courses of a form of education organized according to the law, except for those who interrupt them for medical reasons, and do not register unmotivated absences during a semester. to lead to a drop in grade of 8.

The most important tax for employees in Romania is the income tax. You pay income tax in monthly installments on all income in a calendar year – for salary income.

The public health system in Romania is a universal system based in terms of funding on contributions paid by insured persons. Some categories such as minor children or pensioners are insured without paying the contributions.

The quality of insured can be acquired if the following conditions are met:

Citizens of the EU / EEA / Swiss Confederation can be employed in Romania in vocational training or apprenticeship activities under the same conditions as Romanian citizens.
The general condition that must be fulfilled in order to participate in a training or apprenticeship program that ends with an officially recognized certification on the Romanian territory is the graduation of the 8-year compulsory education courses.
If the participation in the training or apprenticeship program requires a stay longer than 90 days on the Romanian territory, the EU citizen can apply for a residence permit.
Apprenticeship programs are offered by vocational schools or crafting high schools. Persons enrolled in apprenticeship programs receive an allowance. The apprenticeship activity is regulated by Law no. 279 of 2005.
