An employment contract is one by which a natural person undertakes, upon a retribution, to render his activity to another or other persons within the organization and under their authority. It is a document containing the following information: rights and duties of the employer and employee, place of work, opening hours, right to vacation, salary, allowances and bonuses (if applicable).
In Portugal, there are different employment contracts and in turn with different conditions and specificities.
The employment contracts provided are:
- Fixed-term employment contract: it has a duration previously defined by the company and must be used only to satisfy the entity’s temporary needs. It has a maximum duration of 2 renewals
- Open-ended contract: if the employer made you this contract, it is because it is effective, that is, you belong to the company’s staff. It has no associated duration..
- Uncertain term: contract: aims to satisfy the temporary needs of the company, but without an end date. It has a maximum duration of 4 years.
- Very short-term employment contract: used for more specific purposes, such as seasonal agricultural activity or tourist events. The employment contract cannot exceed 35 days.
- Temporary Work Contract; is done by a temporary company and the employer, and not with the company where you may perform functions / provide services. This contract follows the same logic as the fixed-term or uncertain contract, that is, its duration depends on the needs of the company.
- Part-time employment contract: work that corresponds to a weekly period shorter than that practiced on a full-time basis,
- Service agreement Contrat: this contrat provides that the service provider is an independent worker who has the autonomy to manage his work, time, space and contributions according to the needs of the company (ies). They are usually supplies of services or goods that happen pontually and without the need to contract signature as described above.
